What it is

A counterattack (or “counter”, etc.) is an attacking on an opponent about when they should be left open.

When the opponent creates a big opening, if you attack it quickly, you can basically attack them with impunity. When someone has such a recovery time period due to their action that you can count on an attack without fear of retribution, this is known as a “guaranteed counterattack”, or “counterattack for free”, etc.
